alright this is annoying me! medusa wasn’t a rape victim in greek mythology!

there’s no existing greek poet who ever wrote about that origin for her. she was born a gorgon with her two sisters stheno and euryale. perseus’ who was roughly about a teenager when he killed medusa, did so to save his mother because the king of the island they washed up on, wanted his mother, and wanted to rid himself of perseus, so he charged perseus to bring him the head of medusa, a vicious gorgon, in which the king was sure that perseus would be turned into stone like many many others. athena & hermes aided him; athena gave him a shield & hermes gave him his winged sandals. using this mirror athena gave him, he was able to turn the tides on medusa because he could see her reflection without being turned to stone, he then cut her head off.

stop using ovid’s version as the greek version, roman and greek as much as people love to make jokes that romans copied greeks, they have their differences including this myth.

because I’ve already received a response that displays that people are picking and choosing what I was saying. did I say people can’t use it as a sexual assault story? no, but use it as a roman myth because not only would it not be accurate if you used it as a greek myth, but because ovid has intentions to hate in the gods. he hated religion, and went out of his way to make the gods look bad, and people are feeding into it. do whatever you want when it’s roman mythology, but do not attest to it being greek myth

diioonysus

call me tone deaf all you want but idc, I’m putting greek culture above people taking a story that that was clearly written by a roman man who hated religion and slapping greek on it. if you have a problem that I’m not being “nice” to people that use the medusa roman story, then sorry but I can care less.

Can confirm that in Greek mythology she is simply a creature with special powers, her tragedy is that she was born a mortal unlike her whole family, Athena had nothing to do with her and she slept consensually with Poseidon in a dreamy field full of flowers.

When I was little I LOVED the taste of blues clues kids toothpaste. I'd just straight up eat it. My mom thought this was unhealthy and would take away the toothpaste if she caught me eating it. Or threaten to switch to grown-up mint toothpaste (not as tasty). I would crouch behind the open bathroom door slowly squeezing out blues clues kids toothpaste onto my hands and eating it as quietly as possible

The whole "common era" (BCE-CE) has to be the stupidest thing ever and I say that as a Christian who thinks we should indeed have a secular calendar.

"Oh no we can't use "Before Christ" and "After Christ", that's so Eurocentric. We'll change it to something else, like "common era", that's more neutral."

"Oh okay, and what's gonna be year 0 then?"

"Oh, the year of the birth of Christ of course"

elbiotipo

As far as I'm concerned we live in the year 62 A.G. of the Space Age (After Gagarin), like in a proper sci-fi novel.

HUMANITY DID NOT BEGIN 10.000 YEARS AGO NEITHER DID THE FIRST HUMAN STRUCTURES, THAT'S AN ARBITRARY VAGUE YEAR PULLED OUT OF NOWHERE, AND IT STILL FRAMES IT AROUND THE BIRTH OF CHRIST, THAT CALENDAR IS A STUPID MEME FROM KUZERGARST OR WHATEVER THAT YOUTUBE CHANNEL IS SPELLED I'M TIRED OF SEEING IT IN THE NOTES IT'S SO FHAHAHAHAAHAHA BATMAN I'M GOING TO DESTROY GOTHAM CITY

triviallytrue

having to change all your dates fucking sucks and is almost completely infeasible at this point, and BCE/CE is as good an attempt at secularization as you're gonna get. idk what the issue is here

txttletale

i mean i think this is one of the cases where 'as good an attempt as you're gonna get' is significantly worse than nothing. a thin coat of neutrality over something that is fundamentally not neutral is imo much worse than a plain admission that we're stuck with this date system & of the history behind it. like e.g. 'english as lingua franca' is also something that the world is going to be stuck with for the forseeable future because of inertia but saying "we're going to be calling it The International Language instead of english from now on" would make things much worse rather than better
